Ankara on US Vow to Stop Arming Syrian Kurds: Restore Ties With “True Allies”

Ankara has repeatedly called on Washington to stop arms supplies to the Syrian Kurds, who have been fighting ISIS in the war-torn country.

“We’ve been saying from the very beginning that the US is making a mistake by cooperating with the YPG affiliated with the PKK in the fight against Daesh. Our friend and ally has reiterated that it was a necessity. Now, when ISIS has been defeated, such a necessity disappears. We expect that the US will stop arms supplies to the YPG and restore ties with its true allies in the region,” Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said before his flight to the UK.

The statement comes amid an announcement by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu earlier this week that Donald Trump reassured his counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan that he had ordered to cease supplies of US armaments to the Syrian Kurds.

The White House has confirmed the announcement, saying it was “consistent with our previous policy.”

The following day Cavusoglu stated that “it is our most natural right to expect Trump to keep his promise.”
