According to Russian Minister of Defence General of the Army Sergei Shoigu, during the two-year operation of the Russian Aerospace Forces in Syria, the ISIS financing through oil infrastructure has been disrupted. Sergei Shoigu has addressed the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and its dialogue partners within ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting – Plus (ADMM-Plus).
The ISIS used to make roughly 3 billion dollars a year from oil revenues, sometimes even 10 million dollars a day until 2015. Today, financing source of the ISIS is practically severed in Syria’, said Sergei Shoigu.
The Russian Defence Minister also stressed that the Russian Aerospace Forces had eliminated large terrorists’ concentrations in most critical areas, liberated key cities and towns, unlocked main communication objects, eliminated more than 200 oil and gas wells, 184 oil refineries, 126 petroleum pumping station and about 4,000 petrol tankers. According to him, the ISIS controls less than 5% of the Syrian territory.
Moreover, the Russian Aerospace Forces eliminated 948 training camps, 666 ammo factories and workshops, 1,500 pieces of military hardware.
Militants have been driven out from 998 cities and towns, the liberated territory is 503,223 square km. In total, 1,126,000 people have returned back to their homes since 2017.
As the Russian Defence Minister stressed, the emphasis has been put on humanitarian assistance to Syria. Besides, great work has been done during explosive ordnance disposal. In total 96,105 explosive devices have been defused.
Sergei Shoigu urged the ADMM-Plus members to join the humanitarian mission in the Syrian Arab Republic.
He reminded that due to agreements reached in Astana, four de-escalation zones were functioning in Syria.
“Today, the Syrian Arab Republic badly needs humanitarian aid including food and medical supplies. It is also necessary to restore critical infrastructure and hold mine clearance operation”, stressed Sergei Shoigu addressing the ADMM.
