Russian, Kazakhstan Leaders Discuss Upcoming Round of Syria Talks in Astana

Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Kazakhstan’s president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, discussed by telephone Tuesday preparations for the next round of Syria ceasefire talks scheduled for June in Astana, the Kremlin announced.

They also discussed the state of bilateral relations and key issues on the agenda for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit June 8-9, as well as the June 9 inauguration ceremony of Expo 2017 Astana themed Future Energy.

The fourth round of the so-called Astana Process of talks between the Government of Damascus and the Syrian armed opposition took place in the Kazakh capital early last month.

Those talk resulted in the three guarantors of the ceasefire in Syria – Russia, Turkey and Iran – agreeing to create four safe areas to protect the civilian population and reduce tensions between rebels and government forces.
